Multiple Small Tassel tutorial / Making matching mini tassels the easy way!

Hello everyone. We are living in troubling times, and sometimes it feels as though we shouldn't carry on with the "normal" things. However, when we can't do anything else, we probably should be normal. So, here's a new video. I had to make a set of tassels recently, and thought it would be good to film the process, in the hopes that I would be able to put together a video.
This was an odd process for me - I usually make something having planned what I will film, and what you need to see. Which can mean starting again if I think I missed something. This time though, I wasn't going to start again, as I'd ordered in the silk for the job!

So, I just turned the camera on, and then had to do a fair bit of editing
:)

This method of making matching, small tassels can be used to make literally loads - a long table, two clamps, and you can make all the small tassels you might need to add to, say, a fancy woven fringe.

In other news, have you been over to the One Button a Week blog? Wow, we've had some terrific buttons! There really are some incredibly talented people out there. Do pop over and take a look and be inspired!

Stay well and safe all of you.

  1. Very well edited - all we need to know presented in an orderly manner! I had not seen the 'add the hanging loop' element before (very useful!!!) and the dampening bit - does that work on cotton as well as silk?. Also found the use of the initial binding of the neck with waxed linen helpful. All in all, well done! Worth all the effort, sweetie!
The One Button A Week gang is just fabulous - love the range of ideas and methods - all individual and yet coming together to make a new and wonderful whole. And your gathering up of each week's work is great. I've gotten a bit side tracked but will be back on the button front soon.
Do stay safe and well and hugs all around.xxx

    1. Oh thank you! Mark did most of the editing this time, so he will be pleased :) Damping the threads works even better with cotton and wool than with silk. Wool especially. The secret to excellent pompoms!
I'm loving all of the buttons, always such a pleasure to check them out every evening! Stay safe and well both of you xxx

    2. Huge sighs of relief here - the wind dropped after 36+ hours of roaring (which puts our fire hazard right up there!) and we managed to buy groceries AND gasoline!!!!
Looks as if you kids have some soggy times ahead -stay dry and warm and well. xxx

    3. So glad the winds have died down. Can't imagine being worried about fire as well as weather damage generally. Yes, I think soggy is certainly on the menu! The sun is trying to shine, but it is cold!

    4. Things here are running along reasonably well - all well and warm, which is good, but the last two needlework shops in anywhere near us are both closing at the end of the month - very sad making :( . The place I know best had the building sold out from under her! but she decided that 35 years was long enough to slave over a hot shop. She and a buddy have plans for some jaunts around the west - sights and shops they have been longing to see and never had enough time. But now it will be mail order most of the time - and that is fine for most things but I really do like to see and touch my threads. Oh well, I don't suppose it will do me any harm.
The One a Week Gang is doing such good stuff, from the veriest novice to Yoko and you - must get back in the button rabbit hole and get get Don to put up some stuff! Oh, the sunflowers are just lovely. Thanks for sharing and co-ordinating - it means a great deal to us.
Stay safe and well and warm, and hugs all around. xxx

  2. Just watched the show - that Hayley was sooo chuffed with her Yorkshire button that I just had to laugh - I know the feeling when you 'get' something and it is so much fun!
All is well here - coolish and rainy for a wonder - but otherwise all safe. Trust you all are doing well? Tell Toby I think his button portrait was just lovely. xx

    1. Oh thanks for watching! Yes, that's the best bit of this job, teaching someone else!
We are doing ok, cracking on! Don't seem to have enough time to catch up on everything, but that is just me I think..
I trust you are both keeping well and safe? And thanks for the comment over on YT too xxx

    2. I think teaching is just the most fun and worth all the sweat if just one person 'gets' it, but I've also had some real stinkers. And often I never know if anything actually 'took' - it's a treat when someone shows me a finished work. Which reminds me to send some pictures to a couple of my teachers so they will know I 'got' it!
The local needlepoint guild is gearing up for their biennial exhibit - in a new location and only just about 130 pieces, which is half what they had two years ago. Despite failing to meet posting deadlines I have put in 11 things, including the 20 Fabric Buttons from two years ago - I don't get judged, which might be useful for the comments, because I know the stuff is pretty good and I just want to share. I'll let you know how it comes out. (I should also say that I was a member and helped create the first shows - quite chuffed!)
About that thing with time? I really do think that it just speeds up as we get older - I blinked and my son just turned 54! And we have a 50th wedding anniversary coming up!!!!! And getting anything at all done is just overwhelming! I think we do very well to get out to buy food and I manage to get everything put away on the same day! Still, we are both in pretty good nick, staying well and safe, avoiding groups and unmasked people -I know they have relaxed all sorts of rules, but I don't trust that nasty virus one bit.
      Hugs to all. xxx

  3. Yesterday was interesting - fought my way up the freeway to the Italian American Museum in the heart of Old Los Angeles! An adventure, to say the least. Haven't been downtown in three years, haven't driven past the one place we visit, - hair raising!!! And it did not help that many of the landmarks I have relied on all my life are gone. Ran across (figuratively) a procession of people walking from Mission San Gabriel to the Cathedral - a nine mile stroll. The Mission church had burned and they are raising awareness (did I really write that?) and funds. Lots of traffic police and banners and a hymn or two. And I did finally find my way to a parking place (like hen's teeth) and get to the building - old for us - 1890ish! ;) - nicely restored and a small but nice exhibit of different needlework, ranging from old Sunday best clothing from 'home' to a crocheted bikini bottom. I went for a short workshop on punto en aria - very short, disorganized, noisy (the ladies at the end of the room kept chatting), and the chairs were folding metal torture devices - I left early. Got safely home (more changed scenery) and we had a nice quiet evening. And I will go back because they had a lovely ensemble from Northern Italy with bands of needlelace on the blouse and the skirt - ochre on the blouse and bright colors on the skirt - I think I'll take the Metro up - still a hassle but cheaper and easier. So what sort of adventures have you been having?
Oh, I just realized that sometimes I write back to you in Reply rather than Publish, so it might seem like I've disappeared when really I spoke in the wrong place - did that even make sense?
Stay safe and well. Hugs to all. xxx

    1. Sounds like you've had a great time! I need to do that - go farther afield again, it seems life has been very between set places for a few years hasn't it? We recently watched a YouTube video of a bus ride that I used to take every day for work when we were young, and I did not recognise it - so many of the landmarks were gone as you say. And I travelled it daily for like 3 years.
Yes, the chairs. I had a friend who came to my workshops and usually brought her own wood dining chair and cushion. She knew what she could sit on for long periods and so brought it along. The chair didn't always come - but the cushion always did without fail.
We have had no adventures - unless sunshine and then snow count as such. I currently have a very bad ear infection and lots of antibiotics. How did your display look? I hope they arranged it all well! It's nice to not have to be judged.
Don't worry about where you write! I usually get a notification, it just every so often gets filtered to spam which drives me crazy.
Stay safe and well both of you xxx

    2. I did actually have some fun, seeing new-old places, and leaving before the evil chair did me in completely (only a few leg spasms!), and a chance to go back and see the clothing close up.
I did think about taking my chair - next time I will, even if they do look at me funny lugging a chair down the street.
So sorry about the bum ear! :( Don and I both had ear aches like mad when we were young, so empathize completely. I remember the family G.P. saying he had never seen so much scarring while he was peering into my ears (on a housecall, no less!!! - very long time ago!). Hope it gets cleared up soon.
I'm going to try and get photos with captions in a place that you can see them if you want too - I have faith in Don's tech. abilities. Will let you know.
Hope the snow didn't freeze all the lilacs and cherry blossom.
Stay safe and well, all three of you. xxx

    3. Housecall! yes, a very very long time ago. I doubt those days will return. Blossom seems ok, but apparently more is forecast this week. So I don't know. Around here, the wind usually takes the blossom well before anything else. The lilac in the front hedge has a while to go yet, so we'll see. Would be great to see pictures!

  4. Hold some good thoughts for me on Wednesday - I get to have the lower front tooth removed (the one that was dissolving itself!) and the hole prepared for an implant. A previous trip down this path went very well indeed, with an absolute minimum of pain and fuss, so here's hoping this comes off as well.

  5. Safely home, tooth out, but it took some doing - jawbone had decided it wanted to keep tooth root and that entailed some fancy equipment and some interesting pressure on my jaw! Don was getting ready to get me because it took longer than he thought it should - who knew a knight in shining armor is balding and bearded? Well stocked with yoghurt and cottage cheese and ice cream - no biting or chewing for a few days. Thanks for the good thoughts! xx

    1. Ouch. I'm glad it is out but I do hope that extra pressure doesn't cause you any real pain while it heals. We have to love our knights don't we! I hope you feel better soon xx
