How to make a square fabric button - just fabric, needle & thread!

Happy new year! Can I still say this on the 19th of January? Of course I can!

I have actually uploaded two videos today - this one, which is a super easy way to make a square fabric button. Of course, being me, I also have to add other things to the basic video, including working a thread shank, adding a button back, and making the same button using finer threads.

The other is a product support video for out PaperLathe Tassel & Bead system.
We are moving this over to USB only, and our original Hints & Tips videos won't run from a USB. So I will be adding remakes to YouTube so that they can easily be found.

We came up with the PaperLathe system when I became frustrated at not being able to find tassels moulds easily - yet I still wanted to learn how to make them. We now have a companion kit too - for tassels stands and new designs. Of course, these are available on our website at

I do hope that 2024 is a great year for you all!

  1. These little fabric squares seem to offer lots of chances to be inventive! And the beads are great fun! Thanks for the postings. We are both well, a bit damp and coolish, but Don gave me a small space heater to keep our ankles cozy while sitting together in the evening. Mark seems to have been very busy coming up with new and useful bits and bobs - I really like the shuttle/needle - I have been considering having a go at netting and that would be the perfect tool. Trust all is well there - looks like you have some wind and rain coming in - stay warm and dry as best you can. xxx

    1. Yes, Toby has one of those heaters near his bed at the unit - makes him very happy! Now me, I am very happy with leg warmers for my ankles! I Don't know why they ever went out of fashion! The wind has howled and blown, but touch wood, so far ok for us this time around. The rain will be the pain, both roads into work are liable to flood.
Yes, they will work for netting too. I like to keep him busy ;)
Stay safe and well and warm both of you xx

    2. I hope you are both well? I'm not sure where in CA you are, but thought I'd check in. xx

    3. Don't know the date of the 4:31 pm note, but I can tell you we are very fortunately situated about 10 miles south east of Los Angeles International Airport, somewhat sheltered from the worst of the weather that seems to be coming along. It has been 25 or 30 years since there was any serious flooding - the Army Corp of Engineers finally worked out how to make the local creek drain properly and how to keep the road under the Interstate highway dry. It was rather amazing to see film of the Los Angeles River in fullish flood - very rare since we only get an average of 13 to 14 inches of rain in a whole year (unlike some counties I know of! ;) ) and the snow pack in the mountains north and east (main source of water for much of the region) is excellent. The only remotely serious thing for us personally is not being able to go for our walks! 55', windy and raining are not conducive to a brisk walk around the block! We both hate getting our ears wet and our glasses rain spotted!
So glad to hear Toby is on the mend - holding good thoughts for all three of you! xxx

  2. I do remember watching water coming up over the side walks and wheelie bins sailing down the gutters before the engineers did their thing - and our lot is the high point in this area! Hasn't done that in many years and they also managed to fix a long low section of street that we used to come home from work - one had to cling to the crown of the road and hope no idiot in a giant Range Rover was driving north at full speed! Still, we always made it home safely! x

    1. I'm so glad to hear that you haven't been flooded - though high winds and lots of rain can still be annoying when it isn't too normal an occurrence! We are just plodding on, they are forecasting snow tonight and tomorrow, but the way it looks now I don't see it. It certainly would not be the first time the weather report was wrong! Yesterday we had enough rain to start a little torrent on the main road so who knows! Yes, Toby is now on the mend, much better than he was. Had a bit of a scare but he is thankfully much more his old self again now. Stay well and safe - and dry - both of you!
