Happy birthday Anne!

A little different for today's blog - wishing our design team member Anne a wonderful birthday!

When I first came into the industry, I was quite confused about the term DT member. While it stands for design team, it isn't people who design products (well, it can be, but that's different again), but rather a person who takes the products or kits and makes samples for TV and other publicity.

In other words, someone quite invaluable!

I'm really lucky to have some lovely ladies on my team, all with a different style, you can see just a bit of Anne's work below.

You can follow Anne on her blog and her Facebook page, as well as seeing creations in our Gina-B Silkworks Group.

Right, back to prepping for tonight's shows!

A bit of sunshine!

Ganutell flower kit from Gina-B Silkworks

As I write, there's a bit of sunshine trying to brighten the day. Which is needed! I know it's only February, but the winter has seemed long this year. Probably a result of lockdown.

We are still busy getting ready for our Hochanda shows of course. (Feb 25th at 5pm and 9pm). On our 9pm show the focus will be ganutell, and a new kit highlighting a different ganutell technique. By twisting thread and wire together you can make more unusual - and robust - shapes. All with a bit of sparkle! Ganutell mean winding a lot of wire into kit-ready coils. As you can imagine, this isn't the most favourite of my jobs :)

I hope that you all get a bit of sunshine this week!

Packing and prepping

Gina-B Silkworks Embroidered Zwirnknopfe Little Button Journal Kit

Just a short update for today. We are busy busy packing new kits for our first Hochanda shows of 2021 next week. I'll be on at 5pm with buttons - and launching the above kit.

This is a new Little Button Journal kit - "Embroidered Zwirnknopfe". So a really nice addition to your button making skill set.

At 9pm it's all about ganutell - and a new kits and new tool set which I am really excited about. It took us a while, but I have been having fun playing, so more about that later :)

Have you seen our latest jigsaw?

Have fun!

Right, off to wind off more wire for the new ganutell kits!

Teneriffe experiments

I'm often asked if a particular thread can be used for a particular technique - but I haven't always tried them. I am a great believer in experimenting though, as what may not work for one application may be wonderful for another.

Take Teneriffe lace for instance. Like all lace, the thread used should be strong, usually fine, and with a bit of body. It needs to be able to hold a knot - so slippery threads will often give poor results. If your intention is to make a lace tablecloth, then you really do need something designed for lace making - a lace thread or a fine crochet thread.

However, using wool to make flowers on a Teneriffe loom works a treat! And perle cotton (not as smooth as traditional lace threads) gives more option for colour and has the advantage of washing well.

But stranded embroidery cotton?

Normally, I would not recommend it, as it isn't actually that strong. But, I thought I'd have a play.

Using one strand

I'll be honest, this wasn't easy. I was worried I would break the thread, so took my time tying the knots. I think that this would be ok for the smallest motifs that are going to be appliqued onto something else, but you do need to be aware of how hard you pull the knots.

Using three strands

Better. I wasn't worried that I was going to break the thread. However, because the strands are not twisted tightly it is a little difficult picking up the correct threads to knot! You have to take care to get all of the threads.

Again, great for an applique motif, but not enough strength for a stand alone piece.

Using six strands

As you can see, quite nice chunky motif with the thread as it comes from the pull skein. I certainly didn't feel that I would break the thread at every knot. The fact that the thread had not been split into individual threads did mean it was a little easier to catch every thread when knotting.

I do still feel though that it would be best used an an applique motif.

I think that using stranded embroidery cotton does open up a lot of possibilities for colour - but I would only use it for pieces where I am securing the motif onto the fabric. And not as an insert. I don't think the embroidery threads on their own would be strong enough to withstand being used as "lace proper".

I reckon that if you were using it to make micro lace motifs for buttons say, then it would be great - just take care on those knots if you are using a single thread.

Stay safe everyone!

Another snow day... or week!

Here we go again! Couldn't get out yesterday and certainly can't today. So, if you are waiting on orders do please rest assured they will get sent the moment we can.

As the forecast was for snow, we left the unit on Friday with boxes of components to pack. Yesterday it was button packs for the journal kits - today I think I will be winding wire for ganutell kits.

We have two shows coming up on Hochanda - on the 25th. We'll have a couple of new kits too, so we have at least got quite a lot to keep us busy. Especially when our phone lines have decided to play up again (they went down a month ago). Don't even get me started on that subject. How a nation is meant to work from home when BT can't be bothered to modernise lines I really don't know. We loose our phone and internet at least twice a year - and sometimes more...

Enough of that!

I also managed to do a little more writing over the weekend. Not as much as I would have liked, but I am starting to wrestle the thing into some kind of sense I think....

(look! old fashioned index cards!)

Stay safe and well everyone

A little bit of fun

A little bit of fun for you - the above is an online jigsaw using an image from my One Button a Day 2016 buttons. It's free to play, and rather addictive (and you can choose a different number of pieces to make it even harder on their website!). If the above doesn't work for you, do visit the puzzle on the puzzle page by clicking here. We'll add others I think!

I saw the idea from Izabela of Prior Attire, who's been releasing some awesome photos as online jigsaws. Do look her up if you are over on the site.

In other news, in case you missed it, I've also added a new tutorial over on YouTube. This one is for a lovely shiny base underneath your needlework or crochet buttons.

I'm aiming to try to upload these on a more regular basis this year, so let's see how my time management works out...

hmmm. :)

Stay safe and well all!
